Given the dizzyingly nonlinear and recursive temporal structures of the narrative (not to mention how these are repeated and complicated in four subsequent novels), rather than attempting to offer a definitive interpretation or universal theory of Holdstock’s work(s), Kincaid sets himself an appropriately circumscribed goal: to suggest “something of the originality, the importance, and the downright strangeness” of the text.
